How-To: Install Windows Vista & Windows XP In Dual Boot Mode

After the Microsoft’s Release of its new version of Windows called ‘ Windows Vista ‘, every computer manufacturers started to preload their computers with Windows Vista Operating System for their customers. Especially HP is shipping most of its Laptops with Windows Vista Operating system and not supporting the Windows XP Operating System.

Since many microsoft fans itself hates Windows Vista Operating System we are all in need to install the prevous version of Windows Operating System ‘ Windows XP ‘ on our computers over the Windows Vista or with Dual Boot to the Windows Vista. If you want to install Windows XP by removing Windows Vista completely then their is no problem, you could goahead with the usual Windows XP Installation procedures. But, if you want Dual boot of Windows XP and Windows Vista means then you have some work to do manually to get them both in the Dual Boot Mode.

The Windows Vista’s bootloader is different from Windows XP Boot laoder. So, if you install Windows XP even on a separate partition (i.e. Vista on C:\ & XP on D:\ ) on a Vista preloaded computer, the Vista’s bootloader will be overwrited by the Windows XP’s Boot Loader. So you have to follow the steps given below to make the Windows Vista and Windows XP in Dual Boot Mode.

Guide To Install Windows Vista & Windows XP In Dual Boot Mode :

  1. Boot from Windows XP CD or DVD and perform clean installation in D drive.
  2. Now we are getting to boot in Windows XP, so now boot with Windows Vista’s DVD and choose Regional Settings and click on Next.
  3. Now choose Repair your Computer, it automatically detect Windows Vista’s partition and repair all kind of problem that cause unable to boot in Vista by clicking on Repair button OR then choose Startup Repair option.
  4. Restart your computer to boot in Windows Vista and run CMD as Administrator and execute the following commands one by one to add boot manager entries of Windows XP in boot menu.

bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d “Earlier version of Windows”

bcdedit /set {ntldr} device boot

bcdedit /set {ntldr} path \ntldr

bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast

Now reboot your computer and you should have the option to boot to either Earlier version of Windows or Windows Vista.
